Divestment

In finance and economics, divestment or divestiture is the reduction of some kind of asset, for either financial or social goals.

Divestment in Wisconisn has been endorsed by liberals and conservatives, Republicans & Democrats. There is a sense, and recognition, that as we did with South Africa, economic pressure from the United States is required.
The folling is a call to action regarding Senate Resolution 28.

Dear Friends:
After a year of effort, and thanks to the persistence and leadership of State Senator Spencer Coggs, the Wisconsin State Senate is very close to going on the record in favor of state divestment from Darfur. Although the bill that passed a Senate Committee today is less than we had hoped for, it is a positive step forward.

Senator Coggs, State Representative Fred Kessler, and State Senator Sheila Harsdorf have led the effort for the past year to pass a divestment bill based on the Sudan Divestment Task Force (www.sudandivestment.org) model, forcing the state investment board to stop investing taxpayer and public employee retiree dollars in companies that underwrite genocide.

However, that effort did not succeed despite our best efforts, and as the legislative session is about to end, Senator Coggs worked with the national team at SDTF to write a “resolution”, which at least puts the legislature on the record, and encourages positive action by the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, while not going as far as requiring SWIB to divest.

SR 28 passed committee today, March 11, and could be taken up for a vote by the full Wisconsin State Senate as soon as Thursday, March 13.

It would be very helpful if you did three quick things:

1. Call your State Senator, at 1-800-362-9472, and ask them to support SR 28, Senator Coggs’ Resolution to encourage the State of Wisconsin Investment Board to divest from companies that support genocide in Darfur.

2. EMAIL a statement about why the State of Wisconsin should take action to divest from companies that provide financial support to the genocidal regime in Sudan, to info@darfuractioncoalition.org, so it can be submitted for the legislative record and shared with other Senators.

3. FORWARD this email to friends, family, colleagues, fellow congregants at your place of worship, and anyone else that you think might be willing to take action!

Thanks for your quick action! We are close to success, and your efforts can put us over the top in the Wisconsin State Senate! And thanks again to Rep. Kessler, Sen. Harsdorf, and especially to Sen. Coggs for their tremendous leadership.

Thanks for your quick action!
