Read "The Genocide Continues" NY Times editorial, June 17, 2008 4/16/08 From: Hadar Susskind, Washington Director Salomon Kalach, Program Associate Two important ACTIONS for Darfur Action: URGENT!! Write your Representatives and urge them to support peacekeeping, humanitarian, and development funding in the Supplemental Spending Bill. Also, urge your Representatives to cosponsor H. Res. 1093. Background Congress has been working on the Fiscal Year 2008 emergency supplemental spending bill, which includes financial commitments to humanitarian relief, peacekeeping and development efforts throughout Sudan. However, even with the additional emergency spending provided in the current bill, we are concerned that current funds are insufficient to meet the dire needs on the ground. JCPA, along with other faith groups, has signed-on to a letter asking for more robust appropriations. Click here to read the letter. In addition, Rep. Michael Capuano has introduced H.Res.1093, which calls on President Bush not to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, until China takes credible steps to persuade Sudan to end the genocide in Darfur and allow full deployment of the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur. JCPA recently issued a press release on the matter. Click here to read the JCPA statement. Action Needed: 1. Urge your representatives to support stronger appropriations in the emergency supplemental bill, and to include much-needed additional funding for humanitarian aid, peacekeeping and diplomatic efforts. 2. Urge your representatives to co-sponsor and/or support H.Res.1093. To view a list of current co-sponsors and other details of the bill click here.
